Renowned Pakistani designer Deepak Perwani recently praised Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee for completing 25 glorious years in the industry. Sabyasachi, celebrated for his timeless aesthetics and bridal couture, has become a global icon, and his 25-year anniversary show was nothing short of spectacular.
Perwani, known for his keen eye and contributions to South Asian fashion, expressed admiration not just for Sabyasachi but for India’s overall strides in the global fashion arena. “Indian fashion comes of age with Sabyasachi’s 25-year anniversary show. With Dior showing in Mumbai last year and Rahul and Amit in Paris, Indian couture has arrived globally,” Perwani remarked.
He further applauded the role of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and the country’s commitment to nurturing its talent. “Nothing but praise for FDCI and the vision of how India has invested in its designers. They have understood not just the power but also the business of fashion,” he said.
Perwani also highlighted how India’s fashion industry links designers with buyers, retailers, and investors, ensuring a global presence. “Bravo! With Deepika and Christie, the world is their oyster. And so is the business of fashion,” he added, recalling Manish Arora’s famous words, for us, “this is just fish fry.”
Deepak Perwani’s thoughtful words reflect a deep respect for India’s achievements in elevating South Asian fashion to the global stage, proving that creativity knows no borders.
The Pakistani fashion industry has immense talent, but to compete on a global scale, it needs a strategic approach. Investing in designer talent, creating strong platforms like India’s FDCI, and forging connections with international buyers and retailers are key. Additionally, focusing on marketing, global branding, and fashion weeks that attract international attention can elevate the industry. Learning from India’s success, Pakistan can position itself as a global fashion powerhouse by merging creativity with the business of fashion.
