Bakhtawar (Review): Yumna Zaidi Delivers Yet Another Knockout Performance!

HUM TV’s latest venture Bakhtawar has been in the news ever since the initial teasers were released. Featuring powerhouse Yumna Zaidi, the first look saw the actor in multiple avatars making viewers hint at a double role. Bakhtwar is the journey of a young headstrong girl trying to escape her troubled home, difficulties and pain and create a better tomorrow for herself. The first episode aired on 17th July and had us mesmerized. Let’s review…

 

The Makers 

 

Bakhtawar is written by Nadia Akhtar and directed by Shahid Shafaat. It is produced by Momina Duraid. The cast includes Zaviyar Naumaan Ijaz, Saqib Sameer, Mizna Waqas, Noreen Gulwani, Shamoon Abbasi, Sunil Shankar, Huma Nawab, Adnan Shah Tipu, and others.

 

The Premise

 

Episode one introduces the protagonist Bakhtawar (Yumna Zaidi). She is the beloved of her elder sister Naseema. Things take a turn when her father Razzaq (Noor-ul-Hassan) a gambler and alcoholic forcefully marries Naseema to a much older man. Bakhtawar’s mother Shareefa (Huma Nawab) tries to stop the proceedings but fails. 

 

The story moves forward with a period of six years and Bakhtwar is now studying in college. She’s a self-made girl who gives tuition to complete her education. Her brother Guddu’s ailing health is a huge matter of concern. Her uncle Hameed (Adnan Shah Tipu) supports them with a purpose that Bakhtawar should marry his mentally retarded son Rizwan. There’s also a romantic angle between Bakhtawar and her best friend brother Ahad. Destiny takes a horrific turn when Guddu passes away. Adding more to the horror is that Hameed forces Bakhtawar to marry his son. She is clueless about what to do? She finally decides to escape to Karachi. 

 

 What’s good?

 

The director and writer both should be credited for a fast-paced first episode. The proceedings are so quick and intriguing that every moment feels like a roller coaster ride. The plot is set and a world of Bakhtwar is created and we can’t wait for enough for the narrative to move forward in the upcoming episodes.  

 

Shining Acts

 

Right from the word go, its Yumna Zaidi’s show all the way. She sinks her teeth deep into a meaty role and nails it to perfection. Her postures, gestures, and expressions add great value and add momentum to the premise. Huma Nawab is first rate. Adnan Shah Tipu is good. Noor-ul-Hassan shines in a cameo. The rest of the cast is yet to make an appearance. 

 

Final Word So Far

  

Bakhtawar is off to a great start. It has set the pace for an intriguing watch. From Bakhtawar to Bakhto, one can’t wait to witness the highs and lows of her journey.
