Fashion Times Magazine (FTM): What made you join the industry?
Salma Zafar Asim (SZA): I never thought of getting into acting. What initially started was an outlet and opportunity to earn a name and live on my own. All of it soon became my passion. I have always been eager and willing to go beyond my comfort zone. This is what has pushed me to become a part of our diverse industry.
(FTM): Are you satisfied with the drama content being produced these days?
(SZA): Not really. I feel like we have so much potential. Unfortunately, we are wasting it in the recurring production of dramas with the same old sob stories. It’s time to shift from clichéd saas-bahu and husband-wife narratives. Our viewership is very diverse and has drastically changed. We should create more content on educational and moral grounds that helps break negative stereotypes and let our society progress as a whole.
(FTM): Are you happy with the roles written for on-screen mothers? If not what kind of changes you would like to see?
(SZA): I think there’s a recurring pattern of showcasing parents as either becharay with no stronghold in the family or as way too negative. We should showcase them as stronger in positive family relationships wherein parents have their rightful say and place in the house as characters.
(FTM): What according to you is your best work so far?
(SZA): I don’t think any role of mine so far truly reflects my best potential. I hope to do some meatier and stronger characters in the future; allowing me to truly showcase my craft.
(FTM): On set, how’s your equation with the young actors? Any piece of advice for them?
(SZA): Thankfully I have always had a good and positive encounter with every one of them. I always guide them that respect goes both ways. One has to give it to receive it. And above all; you need to respect yourself. Simply own your work and the workplace dynamics wholeheartedly. What is destined will reach you, have positivity, faith and a respectful source, especially in your professional life.
(FTM): Could you please tell us about your upcoming projects?
(SZA): Currently, I have my plate full with projects like ‘Adawat’, ‘Namak Haram’ and ‘Irada’. Then there is ‘Ghair’ on ARY Digital and ‘Jaley Man Mera’ on Green Entertainment. Also, I am a part of the recently released feature film ‘Jee Ve Sohneya Je’.
