Pakistan Fires Back at Bollywood Narratives with Mera Lyari

Bollywood’s depiction of Pakistan has long leaned on stereotypes — heavy-handed aesthetics, exaggerated cultural cues, and politically charged storytelling that often sacrifices realism. Dhurandhar, India’s latest spy thriller set in Karachi’s Lyari area, followed the same familiar pattern.

In response, Pakistan is preparing to counter this portrayal with its own feature film, Mera Lyari. Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the project on Saturday, describing it as a corrective to what he termed persistent negative propaganda from the Indian film industry.

According to Memon, Mera Lyari aims to present an authentic image of the neighbourhood, highlighting its peace, resilience, and cultural pride rather than conflict and criminality. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the minister confirmed that the film is slated for release next month and shared promotional posters revealing its creative team.

The cast includes Ayesha Omar, Dananeer Mobeen, Samiya Mumtaz, Nayyar Ejaz, Trinette Lucas, Paras Masroor, Adnan Shah Tipu, and Shoaib Khan. The film is written and directed by Abu Aleeha, known for Taxali Gate, and is executive produced by Ayesha Omar under her production banner, Hawksbay Productions.

Controversy around Dhurandhar intensified last week when Indian media reported that the film was denied clearance in several Gulf countries due to its alleged anti-Pakistan content. This mirrors earlier actions against similar films, including Fighter (2024), which dramatized India’s 2019 airstrikes on Pakistan.

Additionally, a supporter of the Pakistan Peoples Party filed a petition in a Karachi district court seeking legal action against the makers of Dhurandhar. The complaint alleges unauthorized use of the PPP’s flag, rally footage, and the likeness of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, claiming the film’s trailer portrayed the party as being sympathetic to terrorism.
