Neelofar Cast Press Meet Stirs Debate as Stars Call Out Neglect of Pakistani Cinema

The star-studded cast of the upcoming film Neelofar came together at Karachi’s iconic Frere Hall on Friday, discussing the movie’s importance in Pakistan’s evolving film landscape and offering insight into its lengthy production journey.

Fawad Khan — both lead actor and executive producer — shared that the film represents “five years of hard work.” He revealed that Neelofar marks his first venture into production because he instantly connected with the story and felt compelled to take a creative gamble. Mahira Khan, his co-star and long-time collaborator, said she loved the story but ultimately agreed to the project because of Fawad’s request, reflecting on their shared rise to fame through the hit drama Humsafar. “Sometimes you get stories where you simply want to be part of it, no matter the role,” she said.

Behroze Sabzwari echoed similar sentiments, stating he couldn’t refuse Fawad’s offer. He praised the simultaneous local and international release of the film while regretting that cinema outings have become financially out of reach for most Pakistanis, enjoyed primarily by “the elite five percent.”

Atiqa Odho expressed happiness at the “Humsafar family” reuniting for Neelofar. Reflecting on her experiences in the 90s film industry, she voiced disappointment over how many legendary artists suffered from lack of state and public support. She added that she will attend the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah next month, where she intends to advocate for investment in Pakistani cinema.

Sarwat Gilani highlighted that the film was crafted through a “slow and intentional process,” urging potential investors to support the struggling industry, promising their efforts would not disappoint. Madiha Imam said she felt cared for during production, while Sabzwari added that the supportive environment motivated the cast to deliver their best work. Fawad Khan credited director Ammar Rasool for the film’s emotionally driven soundtrack, noting his deep involvement in choosing the musicians. When asked about favorite tracks, the cast overwhelmingly voted for “Ja Rahe.”
